Madeline, GLTS Senior, Carpentry

I’m a senior in carpentry. Before I started this program, a hammer was the only tool I knew how to use. Now I can use a circular saw, table saw, nail gun, impact driver and a bunch of other tools. My favorite is probably the circular saw. Most people say it’s dangerous. However, my freshman year I learned how to use it and I really wasn’t at all scared because my teacher was really good at showing us how to use it safely.

I’m really proud of the work I have done on this house. I worked on most of the second floor flooring, so when people walk across it that’s my floor.

There are only 4 girls in the program out of 14 students. Before Covid we took some field trips to meet other women in construction. I appreciated that. I’ve gotten to know a lot of people through this program.

When I’m not working in construction I like to wrestle. I’m on the school wrestling team, although our current season has been postponed. It was exciting to participate in the first state girls wrestling championship in 2019, even though I didn’t get very far.

Next year I plan to attend college and maybe study criminology. Right now it’s focusing on working on getting his house built!
