Lexington First Town to Pass New Zoning Under MBTA Communities Law

Lexington monument and white steepled church

At their April 2023 town meeting, Lexington passed a motion to amend the Zoning Bylaw and Map. This zoning change created districts for multi-family housing or mixed-use developments by-right. This article complies with M.G.L. c. 40A § 3A also known as Multi-Family Zoning Requirement for MBTA Communities.

The lack of zoning for multi-family housing is a barrier for new housing development in Massachusetts. By allowing multifamily housing near transit, we can create new housing in walkable neighborhoods closer to transit. This is not just good housing policy, it is good climate and transportation policy, too.
