Esmeralda, GLTS Junior, Electrician

Working as an electrician is so hands-on which is perfect for me. I really enjoy using tools and seeing how my work comes together to create a finished product. Oh and the pay for electricians isn’t bad either!

What I’ve learned so far has been a great jumpstart to my future career. The difference between working at school and at an actual site like here at Stott Circle is huge. For instance, at school there’s just a wall we work on for electrical work and there’s nothing in the way of our hips and legs. Here, on the other hand, I might have to splice wires under the sink and there are all sorts of obstacles I need to work around and still do the splicing perfectly. Most of the work goes to the seniors, so as a junior I don’t get to work here as often. However, whenever they ask for volunteers to get work done, I’m there! Installing the light fixtures over the island in the kitchen is my proudest work so far, and I can’t wait to continue working on this home.

After graduation I want to go into the union if I get accepted. I intend on going for my masters and work as an electrician.

It’s very rewarding to be providing affordable homes for people. As we are in times where everything is very expensive, it makes me feel happy to know individuals who want to be homeowners get to live out their dream.
