January 20, 2025, marks the 40th national celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, a time to reflect on the legacy of a leader whose vision extended far beyond racial equality. Dr. King's call to action encompassed a fight against economic injustice as well as racial inequality. In August 1966, following the Chicago Campaign, strides were made when the Chicago Housing Authority committed to building low-rise public housing, and the Mortgage Bankers Association pledged to make mortgages accessible to all, regardless of race. The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. hailed the agreement as “the most significant program ever conceived to make open housing a reality” but tempered his optimism with a reminder that it was merely “the first step in a 1,000-mile journey.” Today, the journey he envisioned continues. As we honor Dr. King's life and work, let’s recommit to advancing justice in all its forms. Be emboldened. Local advocacy is one of our greatest tools. Let’s continue the work of creating more abundant, affordable homes for current and future generations.
